Abstract

In economic theory, the concepts of uncertainty and risk are considered fundamental elements that influence individuals’ decision-making processes. Although traditional approaches assume that individuals act rationally under all circumstances, this assumption loses its validity during periods of crisis and uncertainty. Within this context, it becomes evident that individuals' economic decisions are not only shaped by logical reasoning but are also influenced by psychological and emotional factors. In particular, the pandemic period has reshaped the behavior of economic actors, increasing interest in digital assets and alternative investment instruments.

In line with the aim of this study, the impact of the increasing environment of risk and uncertainty during the Covid-19 period in Turkey on demand in cryptocurrency markets has been analyzed. For this purpose, an econometric model was constructed using monthly data from 2018 to 2022, and analyses were conducted within the framework of the VAR (Vector Autoregression) model. The variable CRYPTOTLPHCM, representing the total demand volume in cryptocurrency markets, was selected as the dependent variable. The inflation rate, CDS premium, consumer credit and debt level, and unemployment rate were included in the model as independent variables.

The stationarity of the series was tested using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) tests, while issues such as autocorrelation and heteroskedasticity were addressed through the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method. The relationships and direction of causality between the variables were examined using the Granger Causality Test. The analyses were conducted via the EViews 10 software. The findings indicate that economic uncertainties directly affect the demand for cryptocurrency markets and that, as confidence in traditional financial instruments weakens, digital alternatives become more prominent in decision-making processes.
